There are some things in life that are just good to know. These things can save you time and money and a lot of headache. Today, specifically, I am talking about reading your car tires. Now before you think I’m crazy, I have good reason to share with you the importance of reading your tires. Being able to look at your tires and see the condition they are in can keep you safe, prepared for weather changes, and even save you money!
Tread Life
The first thing that is of importance is being able to read the tires tread. This can help you determine how much life is left in your tires. Tread is variable from tire to tire; however a good rule of thumb is to use the quarter test. If you place a quarter in-between the treads, Washington’s head should not be visible. If you’ve heard the penny test before, it’s not a bad idea, however it may be misleading if you live in an area of wet/snow or rugged roads. In a more arid and dry climate, the penny test may be more suitable because a deep tread is not as necessary.
Pressure
Keeping your tires at an optimal psi will keep not only your tires last longer, but will save you gas money! The pressure in your tires will vary as the temperature varies. It is important to know the manufactures recommended psi for your specific tires and monitor accordingly. Not only can underinflated tires cost you in poor gas mileage, but they will also wear out your tires faster, causing you to buy more often!
Rotation
Tires wear out faster depending on several factors. If your vehicle is FWD or AWD or if you have alignment issues, the tread will wear unevenly. It’s always safe to check the manufacturer’s recommendation, but another rule of thumb for rotating tires is approximately every 7,500 miles or every 6 months. By rotating your tires, you’ll wear the tread evenly, and get the longest life out of them.
