Love living in a winter wonderland? Can’t get enough of the free-spirited ice skating or the fun snow-angels in the yard? Uh… yeah… me either. Winter can be beautiful and you can do lots of activities that you just can’t do any other time of year, but when it comes to driving your car, winter is my least favorite time of the year. You’re probably thinking I’m going to talk about winterizing your car in the service department at Woody’s, or how to keep your nice new car safe from old man winter, right? Well, sort of. My wife just got a new car and the best way she can think of to “winterize” it is to put it in the garage and drive the winter beater. Yes, I said winter beater. Instead of getting another set of expensive snow tires, exposing the new car to all the road chemicals and salt, and risking an accident on the slippery, icy roads, her answer is to drive the winter beater. Of course, you can outfit your shiny, new pride and joy like this and hope for the best…
The winter beater is a very mission-specific vehicle who’s job is to “throw itself on the grenade” so it’s buddies can live. The winter beater, like this 2005 Mercury Mountaineer, will cut through the drifts with it’s all-wheel-drive, keep the kid’s in comfort with the third row, and keep the driver happy with heated leather seats. Not big enough? How about a 4×4 1998 Chevrolet Suburban? This is one force that mother nature isn’t going to be stopping anytime soon… Meanwhile, the new car is home, snuggled safely in the garage. What? you think I’m crazy for keeping a vehicle just for the winter onslaught? Not so, because the winter beater is a tireless trooper that keeps on ticking, and even though winter will eventually end, we’re gonna need a summer beater. Something for all that dirt, mud, and sports equipment…
